English whisky

English Whisky is a distilled beverage produced in England. There is currently one distillery called St. George's Distillery in Roudham, Norfolk which opened in 2006. Though England is not very well known for making whisky, there were previously distillers in London, Liverpool and Bristol during the 19th century.[1]

St. Georges Distillery in Roudham, Norfolk was founded in 2006 and is the first whisky (as opposed to malt spirit) to be produced in England for over a century. It produces single malt whisky at 46% ABV. The first whisky came onto the market in 2009 and is 3 years old and is either peated or unpeated. The grain for the whisky comes from Fakenham, the yeast comes from Kingston upon Hull and the water comes from the Breckland. The whisky is sold as The English Whisky Co.

The founder James Nelstrop has described it as a 45 year old dream to make whisky in Norfolk and how barley has historically been sent from Norfolk to Scotland to make whisky. The initial idea was for a micro distillery (similar to a microbrewery) but because of the law banning the distillation of alcohol without a licence HMRC required the distillery to have a still with the minimum size of 1800 litres.

The building suffered a small fire on 27 July 2010. The building where the whisky was stored was not affected in the fire and the company was trading normally soon after.[2]
